Both at school and at university, language teaching is a fundamental and invaluable element for the development of knowledge of foreign cultures. However, teachers of ancient, medieval and modern languages face different challenges: while ancient languages depend almost exclusively on the study of written texts and are taught by colleagues who are specialised in various fields but more or less well trained in language pedagogy, teachers of modern languages are more frequently native speakers and experienced pedagogues, who may however have less solid knowledge of the history and development of their mother tongue.

The contributions collected in this volume bring together new perspectives, theoretical and practical, on language teaching, both modern and ancient, all of which address well-established pedagogical issues and problems. The articles have in common the goal of improving language teaching using all the tools and knowledge at our disposal, regardless of where they come from, and to update our methods, especially in the context of the recent/ongoing pandemic.
