Abstract
Each textbook for learning (and teaching) a foreign language is a historical document reflecting not only specific teaching methods, but also trends in the representation of the foreign language and of the people who speak it, their country and their culture; it also conveys information about political and social views. This article is devoted to the analysis of textbooks on Russian as a foreign language, developed and published in French-speaking countries for French speaking students. On the basis of the data presented in the textbooks, we will analyze the representation of the Russian language and its teaching methods in the time period from 1917 to 1991.
